Dramatically from his character Jenko
Watch Thor The Dark World Online A Separation was Farhadi's last film, which told the stories of two families--one moderately wealthy, the other impoverished--in modern Iran struggling within cultural confines to do what's right in desperate situations. It was my #1 pick for the best film of the year, hands down, and I wasn't alone in my admiration. The devastating and thought-provoking drama won awards at the Berlin International Film Festival, including honors for Farhadi as well as each of its four lead performers. It went on to pick up awards all over the world, including the Academy Award for best Foreign Language film. It was the first Iranian film to ever win this title. Farhadi's acceptance speech that night ( which you can watch here ) was graceful, warm and inspiring, calling for understanding across cultural differences.
Watch The Hunger Games Catching Fire Online But in the aftermath, the government of Iran used the win as a political football. From there, their opinion on Farhadi's work seemed to shift from pride to suspicion, and he set off to France to make his next feature, free from censorship and possible punishment. Early on Academy Award-winning leading lady Marion Cotillard was attached to front The Past, but by the time the film surfaced at festivals, it was The Artist's Bejo who had filled the role. And from the praise in the above trailer, it appears this Academy Award nominee was an exceptional replacement.
Watch Thor 2 Online My incredibly high opinion of Farhadi as a filmmaker has made The Past one of my most anticipated titles of the year. And frankly, the obstacles of creating art in Iran makes its completion alone a reason to celebrate. It's easy in America to take for granted the ability to say whatever you want, but Farhadi, who holds a deep love of his country and its rich culture, has had to tell his stories with one eye on what would be deemed dangerous. Still, A Separation was brave, risky, and a fascinating filmmaking, and I can't wait to see what The Past holds.
Watch The Hunger Games 2 Online Let the parodies begin! A week ago, Volvo blew our minds by releasing an ad that put actor and martial artist Jean-Claude Van Damme between two trucks to demonstrate the precision and directional stability of Volvo Dynamic Steering, and also Van Damme's ability to turn his body into two right angles. The desired effect was achieved, as the video has logged more than 36 million views in the span of about seven days. So it's no surprise that we'd see some parodies pop up. That includes the one above, which comes to us courtesy of Channing Tatum, star of 22 Jump Street, as he attempts to perform a similar stunt and fails.
Watch Bad Grandpa Online From the intermission of Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarentino's Grindhouse rose the hilariously over-the-top Machete, and from the depths of Rodriguez's passion pit came the even more outrageous but uneven Machete Kills. I'm pretty sure a couple of wishing wells and a fleet of warlocks will need to get involved in order for Machete Kills Again...In Space to ever see the light of day, but at least we have the above trailer for an explosive glimpse at what might have been had the sequel not tanked at the box office. The trailer was aired during the movie, so you may not have seen it yet.
Watch Free Birds Online Whereas the first two films were born of a love for exploitation films steeped in rapid-paced violence and thin plots, Machete Kills Again...In Space is an entirely original looking project that doesn't hark back to any other particular film in cinema's history. Particularly nothing George Lucas ever created that rhymes with Snar Bars. Well, I guess the blasters and lightsaber machetes do kind of make it look like Star Wars. But Michelle Rodriguez says "photons," and science fiction has definitely never seen those used before in a weapon.
Watch Gravity Online If the film did get made, it would be good news for all those Leonardo DiCaprio fans who have been dying to see the talented actor step up to the plate against a nemesis as cocksure as Machete. That is, unless they'd find another actor to do it, since they left that open for themselves. But he probably wants to finally make that second film in his Colored Masks trilogy. It's amusing that the film gets an X rating, notably for prolonged sexual content and space violence, as it makes one wonder if such a harsh rating would do anything to hurt the film's earnings. The second film's $14 million worldwide take didn't even match its budget. A shame, really, considering all of the actors involved probably starred in films this year that made twice as much money.
Watch Escape Plan Online Development on the production began in the summer of 2011, just hours after The West Memphis Three were freed from prison after 18 years. By December of that year, he'd cemented Witherspoon to star, and Firth, who previously fronted the Egoyan drama Where the Truth Lies followed soon thereafter. The Past is the latest feature from heralded Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi. After making its world premiere at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, this critically praised drama hit fests all around the world. At long last Sony Pictures Classics is bringing it to theaters in the US this Christmas.
Tatum's video begins similarly, with a close-up of his face as he speaks dramatically from his character Jenko's perspective about how surviving high school was no easy task. "My body is engineered to defy the laws of physics and the mindset to master the most epic of splits," he says. Which I'm pretty sure translates to: Of course, as the star of such films as 21 Jump Street, White House Down, Step Up and Magic Mike, Tatum's no stranger to stunt work and showing off his physical prowess... But it seems the stability and precision of the food carts on the set of 22 Jump Street don't quite measure up to the standards set by Volvo trucks, as things go horribly wrong for Mr. Tatum at the end of the video, and last we see him, he's laying on the ground screaming and swearing. I'm sure I'm not alone in saying we're all hoping he pulls through this ordeal. In the meantime, we're looking forward to the 21 Jump Street sequel, which will bring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill back together on screen for more undercover shenanigans. The film releases into theaters June 13, 2014.
